Audrey M. (Gillis) Greenwood, 94, of Westerly passed away peacefully on August 20, 2017. Born in Newport, RI on April 13, 1923, she was the daughter of Mary (Murphy) Gillis and Jack Gillis. She was the beloved wife of the late Charles W. Greenwood.
Audrey is survived by her daughter Leslie Greenwood of Pawcatuck, CT, her son Jack Greenwood and his wife Laurie of Quaker Hill, CT. Also three grandchildren Colleen Quattromani of Pawcatuck, CT, Thomas Quattromani of Plymouth, MA and his wife Georgia and Dianne Bourbeau of Atlanta, GA, and three great grandchildren; Nina, Isabel, and Gracen.
Audrey graduated from Rogers High School in Newport, RI and Bryant College, in Providence, RI. She was employed as a secretary in the Federal Government (Civil Services) at the Naval Torpedo Station, Newport, RI. In later years she returned to Westerly from Texas, after her husband’s illness and was employed as a secretary in the Purchasing Department of the Westerly Hospital for several years.
Mrs. Greenwood was a member of the Pawcatuck Valley Women’s Club and became a participant in their choral group. She served as a corresponding secretary for AARP and was a member of the International Sunshine Society (Westerly Branch). For many years she was member of the “Y” Garden Club serving as Vice President. She also served as a volunteer at the Westerly Hospital and was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary for over thirty years.
Burial services will be private for family members only. In lieu of flowers a contribution in Audrey’s honor may be made to the “Y” Garden Club, checks payable to Westerly YMCA, 95 High Street, Westerly, RI, 02891.
