April 13, 1950 ~ April 28, 2017 (age 67) 67 Years Old
WESTERLY – Ned Whitford, 67, passed away April 28, 2017, embraced by the love of his family and friends after a very brief battle with lung cancer.

Ned was born in Providence, RI on April 13, 1950, to Ruth (Nagle) and the late Theodore “Ted” Whitford. Ned graduated from Moses Brown School in 1968 where his father taught for many years and later received a B.A. in French from Bowdoin College in 1971. He was the owner of Euro-Car Service, a steadfast business staple in the town of Bradford and then Westerly for 37 years. He was trusted and adored by his loyal customers.

Ned was a true gentle man. He worked hard, lived an honest life, and cared deeply about his family and friends. His kind, quiet manner touched and inspired those who knew him and he was always ready and willing to lend a hand to anyone who needed it. He loved cooking, problem-solving, the night sky, summer vacations and, above all, his family. Ned married Barbara (Champlin) Whitford in 1975. They enjoyed many wonderful trips abroad and summer vacations in Rangeley, Maine. They devoted much of their time to cooking and volunteering for the Chorus of Westerly and Christ Church. His love for his family was unparalleled; he was immensely proud of his daughters and cherished his grandchildren.

Ned was predeceased by his father, Ted. He is survived by his mother, Ruth, wife, Barbara, daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Sean Sweeney, and daughter and son-in-law, Lucy and Michael Freitas. He is missed by his four grandchildren, Ethan and Abigail Sweeney and Rebecca and Cecilia Freitas. He is also survived by his father-in-law, Frank “June” Champlin, Jr., aunt Bette (Nagle) Selle, cousins Terry Selle, Rebecca (Selle) Johansen, Peter Selle, Stephen and Faith (Beam) Benson, niece Cheryl Newman and her family, nephew John Newman and his family, brother-in-law Frank “Butch” Champlin, III and his family, and sister-in-law Deborah (Champlin) Olive and her family.

A celebration of Ned’s life will be held at Christ Church, Westerly on Saturday, May 27, 2017, at 11am. Calling hours are omitted. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Special Olympics, an organization close to Ned’s heart: Special Olympics Rhode Island, Attn: Memorial/Recognition Gift, 370 George Washington Highway, Smithfield, RI 02917 or the Christ Church Men’s Club, an organization to which Ned enjoyed donating his time: Christ Church, Attn: Men’s Club, 7 Elm Street, Westerly, RI 02891. Special thanks are extended to the nurses and staff at Hope Hospice & Palliative Care Rhode Island.
