Judith Angela Sweeten

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Judith Angela Sweeten (nee Pigeon) of Wytheville, VA on April 2nd, 2024. Judith was surrounded by her loved ones and passed away peacefully. 

Judith was born in Willimantic CT on July 20, 1941. With proceeds from the Miss Willimantic award in 1958 she was able to attend Ladycliff College and Connecticut College, ultimately earning her Bachelor's from the University of Connecticut. After graduating, she went on to pursue work in the field of education acting as a tutor, teacher, and staunch advocate for special education in public schools. She also worked as an EMT, and as a foster parent to many children in need before starting her own family.

In 1968 she married Robert Barragan, deceased 1985. In 1986, she remarried Stanley Bruce Sweeten, her lifetime partner and caretaker, and together they raised their family. She also served as secretary treasurer for the Gelbvieh Breeders of Virginia.

Judith was a self-determined woman who put great value in education, her faith, and her family. Her loving memory lives on in her family, and the generations to come.  

Judith is predeceased by her first son Robert Michael Barragan, and is survived by her Husband Bruce Sweeten and children Ray Barragan-Sweeten, Joseph Maggiolo, Sarah E. Rexhepi, and her beloved grandchildren Sophia, Lee, Josephina, Francesca, Illyria, and Elton. 

Wake Services will be held on Wednesday April 10th from 5-6pm at Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home,121 Main St., Westerly RI.

Funeral services will be held at 10am on Thursday, April 11th at St. Pius X Parish 44 Elm St, Westerly RI proceeding to burial at River Bend Cemetery.
