Leland R. Byrer, 88 of Ashaway, RI died peacefully on Tuesday October 24, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Jean (Perrin) Byrer.
Born in Champaign, IL, on December 29, 1928, he was the son of the late Noah R. Byrer and Letha (Kirk) Johnson.
Mr. Byrer had been employed at Electric Boat in Groton, CT for over 38 years before retiring as Crane Operator.
Leland served his country proudly in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He was an active member of St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church in Hope Valley, RI and served for many years volunteering at the church food booth during the Washington County Fair. He was a former member of the Ashaway Volunteer Fire Department.
Besides his loving and devoted wife of over 67 years he will be sadly missed by his daughter; Carol Byrer of Westerly and his two granddaughters; Lisa Rednour and her husband Scott of Ledyard, CT and D’ Ann McNeil and her husband Mark of Pawcatuck , CT. He was the loving great grandfather of Christine, Dylan and Katherine. He also survived by his two brothers and sister; Kenneth W. Arnold of Columbus, IN, Roy Byrer of Loogootee, IN and Shirley Cain of Scottsburg, IN. He also leaves several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother; James Byrer and his sister; Vera Rude.
A celebration of Leland’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday November 4, 2017 at St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church, 63 Canonchet Road, Hope Valley, RI. With military honors immediately following at the Church.
