Beverly Babcock, 84, of Westerly, daughter of the late Charles and Virginia Smith formerly of Westerly, passed away at the Westerly Hospital on Monday, March 12, 2018.
She received a nursing degree in 1977 at Mohegan Community College and a Bachelor of Science and Nursing Degree in 1988 at Rhode Island College and graduated from the California College of Health Sciences with a Master’s Degree.
Her contributions to the community included serving as chairperson for the Narragansett Indian Parent Advising Committee and started the Narragansett Indian Health Services. She was a delegate on the National Council on Aging, and a member of the Ashaway Ambulance Association. She was asked to be the Hopkinton Bicentennial Chorus coordinator for the Hopkinton Historical Society, she worked with the Westerly-Pawcatuck Council for Community Service, and was an officer for Business of Professional Women. She also helped to establish West Covex Adult Day Services with her husband Walter. Her employment included nursing placement, Community Care Nursing, Pleasant Street Baptist Church Secretary, and organist, The Carriage House and The Elms of Westerly.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Walter K. Babcock of Westerly and their daughter Alicia Babcock-Raposo of North Kingstown. She is predeceased by her children Lolita Ann Babcock, Schuyler Perry Babcock and Durene Marie Babcock, her biological parents Gladyce and Abraham Clark, her brother Sydney Barrett, sister Barbara Barrett and her sister Delores Brown. She is also survived by her sisters Sondra L. Barrett,, Millison Barnet-Gibbs and Shirley A. Jones.
A calling hour will be held Sunday, March 18 from 5:00p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main Street, Westerly, RI 02891. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 19, 2018 at 10:00a.m. at the Pleasant Street Baptist Church, 37 Pleasant St., Westerly. All are invited to meet directly at the church.
