Catherine S. Sirois

December 17, 1927 ~ October 31, 2022 (age 94) 94 Years Old

Tribute

Catherine Sirois, 94, of Hopkinton, Rhode Island, died on Monday, October 31, 2022, at Westerly Hospital in Westerly, Rhode Island.

She was born on December 17th, 1927, to Wojciech and Frances Smercak in North Tarrytown (now Sleepy Hollow), New York, and graduated from North Tarrytown High School in 1946. She was employed in the Customer Service Department of The General Motors Company, as a teacher's aide in the Tarrytown Public Schools, and as an admissions clerk in the Emergency Department of Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow. She retired from the hospital’s Purchasing Department in 1987, the year that she and her husband, Arthur Sirois, moved to Hopkinton.

Catherine loved her cats (all cats, really), books, reading magazines (especially National Geographic, Smithsonian, and her beloved New Yorker), and helping children learn to read. She was a longtime volunteer at the Ashaway Free Library and the Ashaway Elementary School library. She also enjoyed knitting, the films of Alfred Hitchcock, and most movies featuring Paul Newman. Every autumn, she looked forward to the start of college basketball season, and in particular, to following the Duke Blue Devils, who were until recently coached by "that nice Polish boy," Mike Krzyzewski.

She was predeceased by her husband and 11 brothers and sisters. Survivors include her daughter, Diane Sirois, of Hopkinton, and numerous nieces, nephews, and their families, to whom she was "Aunt Kitch" (the Smercak cousins) or "Aunt Cathy" (the Sirois cousins).

Arrangements are by Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home of Westerly. A Mass of Christian Burial will be scheduled at a later date at Our Lady of Victory Roman Catholic Church in Ashaway. Burial will be private.

If you wish to honor Catherine's memory, please consider making a donation to the Ashaway Free Library, the Ulster County (New York) SPCA, or Hope Hospice in Rhode Island.
