Tribute

David Andrew Perry, 70, of York, Penn., died Jan. 18, 2023 of leukemia. Born in Providence, R.I., he grew up in Barrington, R.I. but had lived in York for almost 25 years after previously residing in Roslindale, Mass., and Memphis, Tenn.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1970-77, and ran the commissary at the U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart, Germany. He was left partially disabled as the result of a parachuting accident and was held for nine months as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam conflict. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled American Veterans, and Jewish War Veterans of the U.S.A.

He and his wife were the owners of Perry’s General Store on East Market Street in York, Pa., closing the store upon retirement in October 2000. He was known for his generosity in helping those less fortunate, and routinely provided a local needy family with holiday dinners.

He is survived by his wife, Victoria Perry of York; two sons, David Perry Jr. of McSherrystown, Penn. and Joe Perry IV of Roslindale, Mass.; a daughter, Christina Perry of Roslindale, Mass.; and a brother, Ray Perry, and spouse, David Rhea, of Washington, D.C. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe Perry of Barrington, R.I., and Polly Perry Rudolph Fetty of Barrington, Coventry and Warwick, R.I.; two brothers, Ricky and Jimmy Perry, of Barrington, R.I.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Thursday followed by a service at 11 a.m. at Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St., Westerly, RI. Military interment will be at 12:30 p.m. at the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, 301 S. County Trail in Exeter, R.I.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that anyone wishing to honor him please donate in his memory to either the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or the American Cancer Society.
