Edwin “Ted” Rice of North Stonington, passed away on Wednesday July 12, under hospice care at Westerly Hospital after a long and brave battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
Ted was born in Harford, CT on June 11, 1930. Ted attended Kingswood Oxford School in West Hartford before heading to Dartmouth College. He made lifelong friends while at Dartmouth, who visited him and made sure he was a part of all the reunions, despite his difficult disease. Immediately after graduating from Dartmouth with his Masters in Engineering, Ted was wed to Polly Tuttle, his beloved wife of 64 years.
Ted is survived by his wife Polly and his two daughters Laurie Astle and her husband Jim, and Jeanne Stracener. Ted was predeceased by his son, Tom Rice. Ted is also survived by his four granddaughters and their spouses Lauren and Ryan Kelly, Karen and Andrew Hayes, Emily and Brian Stratton and Tracy Astle. Ted was very fortunate to know his two great-grandsons Everett and Theodore Kelly. We will all miss his profound wit and wisdom that he brought to this family in his most unique style, with every passing day.
His career path took him from Pratt and Whitney, to the family business of Goddard and Rice Insurance, CBT as a Vice President of the Trust Dept. to his final and most loved job, The Mystic Seaport. It was there he truly felt a sense of pride and accomplishment to work and teach at the largest maritime museum in the United States.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation and love to the Gadway and Kessler families whose care, friendship and support for Ted was invaluable.
