Erastus H. Benn, III, 89, of Bradford, passed away surrounded by the love of his family on Tuesday, August 28, 2018. Born in Westerly on July 30, 1929, he was the son of the late Erastus H., Jr. and Lydia (Phillips) Benn.

Erastus proudly served his country as a U.S. Army Operating Engineer in the 7691ST HQ & SVC CO VMP Austria, Engineer Construction Detachment while stationed in Germany and Austria. After his time in the service, he continued in construction and trucking, with his most formative experience in the private sector taking place with Gencarelli, Inc. of Westerly, RI. He went on to the establish himself in the trucking industry and founded E.H. Benn and sons Pool Filling Service, which just celebrated fifty years.

Outside of work, he was a member of the Northeast Rockbuster Chapter of the Historical Construction Equipment Association (HCEA). Erastus enjoyed participating in antique equipment shows, demonstrating his skills as an operator, and enjoying time with his friends and fellow members.

Erastus will be remembered for his compassion for others and his work ethic. He worked tirelessly to help everyone. He will be dearly missed by his family and all of the people he encountered.

He leaves his sons David Benn and his wife Janine, Edward Benn and Jeffrey Benn and his wife Ashley; his grandchildren Kimberly, David, Stephanie, Julie, Mike, Hayley, Adelle, Liam and Averie; his great-grandchildren Cameron and Lexie; his sister Emma Neff along with a niece Geri Hespeler and nephews David, Wayne and Richard Neff. He was preceded in death by his son Andrew Benn along with his brother Hamilton Benn.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00a.m. on Saturday, September 1, 2018 at Pilgrims Baptist Church, 27 Chase Hill Rd, Ashaway. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be held privately by the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in his name to Hope Hospice and Palliative Care, 1085 North Main St., Providence, RI 02904 and to Pilgrims Baptist Church.
