Freda Joan Pope

Freda Joan (Sappington) Pope 77, of Hopkinton, RI - beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother – passed at home on November 29th.

Born February 27, 1944 in Washington D.C., she was the daughter of the late Albert O. Sappington and Joan I. (Miner) Sappington.

“Joanie” graduated Suitland High School (MD) in 1962 and married A. Wayne Pope on December 15th that same year. She joined her husband as he entered the ministry - initially serving in Illinois and Texas - eventually settling in North Stonington, where they ministered at Second Baptist Church.

Joan was employed by the US Postal Service where she delivered mail in North Stonington, retiring in 2005. She was an avid cat lover, Red Sox and Patriots fan – and cherished spending time with her family, and church families.

In addition to her parents, Joan is predeceased by her brother James B. Sappington (Torrance, CA)

She is survived by her sister Phoebe (Sappington) Grossenbacher (Westminster, MD) son Kevin Pope (Maricopa, AZ) daughter Kristie Pope-Rantanen (Hopkinton, RI) son Kenneth Pope (Dorchester, SC) daughter-in- law Lan Pope, son-in-law Jim Rantanen, grandchildren Nikki, Scotty, Heather, Chevy, Kyle, Steff, Jen, David, Amanda, Ashley, Kara, Lucas, Liam, great-grandchildren Samantha, Kiara, Penelope, Ronan, Mina, expected great-granddaughter Arya, and sister-in-law Donna Steffensmeier.

For their excellent care, guidance and compassion, the family would like to thank Dr. Mark J. Mancini, Dialysis Center of Westerly, Beacon Hospice of RI, Fresenius Kidney Care of Maricopa and Ahwatukee, AZ - and Pastor Timothy Gengarella.

A memorial service, celebrating Joan’s life, will be held at North Stonington Baptist Church, date TBD.
