Hope A. Merithew

August 31, 1929 ~ October 3, 2017 (age 88) 88 Years Old

Hope A. Merithew, 88, of Westerly, previously of Ashaway, passed away on Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at the Westerly Health Center. Born in Perryville, RI on August 31, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Ralph E. and Ruth J. (Leathers) Merithew.

Hope attended Ashaway elementary school then moved to Westerly and attended Babock Junior High and then Samuel Ward for High School graduating in 1947. While working at the University of RI at night she was able to take courses in BGS. Following school, Hope actively worked throughout her life. She was involved with the School Lunch Program in Westerly, did listings and was a bonded clerk for W.T. Grant and worked as a Senior Clerk Typist and later Principal Clerk Typist for the University of RI bookstore. She finished her career as an associate chaplain with the Community Chaplain Service Inc. visiting home patients. She was active in her faith as a member of Pilgrims’ Baptist Church teaching Sunday school, assisting in the TV camera and sang solos. Most importantly, she loved her family and the times she spent with them were some of her most cherished memories. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

She leaves her son Stephen L. Queen and his companion, Marie of Ashaway, and her daughter Sharon F. Bogue and her husband, Ernie of Griswold, CT; 5 grandchildren Stephen Scott Queen and wife Amy, Sharelle Lee Bogue Whittle and husband Donald, Ernest Marshall Bogue III and wife Donalynn, Erin Mae Bogue and Ira Bogue; 13 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild along with several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings Ralph S. Merithew, Ruth H. Merithew, Kenneth M. Merithew and Jeanne B. Merithew and her nephews Ralph Merithew and William Merithew.

There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Pilgrim’s Baptist Church, 27 Chase Hill Rd. Ashaway. Burial will follow at First Hopkinton Cemetery. Buckler- Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main Street, Westerly, RI 02891 is assisting the family with arrangements.
