James “Jim” Savas of Westerly, RI died peacefully at his home on Monday, December 24, 2018. He is survived by his wife; Florence Savas, daughter; Annie Quinn (Chuck) of Kentucky, son; PJ Savas (Christina) of Westerly, granddaughters; Emma, Alice and Lucy Quinn and a brother; Harry Savas (Carol) of Stoughton, MA.
Jim was born in Lawrence, MA to Peter and Artemis Savas. He graduated from Brockton High School and the University of MA at Amherst. He received a Master’s Degree at URI and did post-graduate work at the University of Connecticut. Jim began his professional career as a software engineer at IBM where he was part of an international team of scientists that developed the first modern era computer known as the 360 system. After his pioneering work at IBM, Jim, along with other colleagues founded Systems Inc., a computer service that helped modernize the record keeping functions of many companies.
Jim was an adjunct philosophy professor at URI, and a professor of computer programming, calculus, and trigonometry at CCRI, Johnson & Wales, and Three Rivers.
