Joan Laurel Gielda

Joan L. (Miller) Gielda, 84, entered into eternal peace on January 4, 2022 at home in Westerly, Rhode Island surrounded by her loving family. She was a longtime resident of Feeding Hills, Massachusetts; Westerly, Rhode Island; and Kissimmee, Florida where she enjoyed winter in her retirement years with her husband. She was born in East Longmeadow, MA to the late Kenneth and Thelma (Norbery) Miller. She is predeceased by her cherished sister Judith (Miller) Wolanin in 2017. She leaves her loving family: Robert S. Gielda, husband of 57 years; son Stephen K. Gielda of Feeding Hills, MA; daughter Susan L. (Gielda) Montagna and her husband Edward of Westerly, RI; granddaughter Laurel Gielda and great-granddaughter Kaelyn Fogg both of Feeding Hills, MA.

Joan graduated from Springfield Technical High School and Springfield Hospital School of Nursing (now Baystate) where she received her degree as a Registered Nurse. She worked for many years as a Registered Nurse at Baystate Medical Center and then went on to private duty nursing. She also worked at Noble Hospital in Westfield, MA until retirement. Joan was a member of the First Congregational of Westfield, MA. She was a capable and talented woman whose family and friends could always rely on for advice or support. She loved her family, animals (primarily cats), making jewelry, was a voracious reader; and traveling with her husband during retirement.

Funeral services will be held at 11am on Wednesday, January 12, 2022 at the Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St. Westerly, RI. Burial will follow at River Bend Cemetery, Westerly. Friends are welcome to gather beginning at 10am until the time of the service.
