John M. Huhtala

John M. Huhtala, 76 of Westerly, RI died peacefully on Saturday May 19, 2018 at his home.  He was the beloved husband of Joyce (Speilvogel) Huhtala.
Born in Willimantic, CT on July 8, 1942 to the late Hannes and Sarah (Millar) Huhtala and grew up in Brookline, CT.
John served his country proudly in the United States Navy and was a member of the Connecticut National Guard.
Mr. Huhtala was employed as a mental health worker for the State of Connecticut for over 30 years before his retirement.
He was a graduate of Eastern Connecticut State University in Willimantic, CT,  and was a member of the Westerly Artist Cooperative Gallery where his talented woodworker and drawings were on display.
John was also, a volunteer at the Westerly Hospital a member of the Franklin Lodge # 20 Masonic Lodge and had been the Chaplain of the Lodge for many years and a life member of the Westerly Yacht Club.  He was an ordained Minister it the Madonna Ministry International.
He will be sadly missed by his son Erik Huhtala and his companion Charlotte Whipple of Putnman , CT.  He also leaves his sister; Janet Huhtala of Salem, CT, his long- time girl-friend Marilyn Risi of Vernon, CT, his granddaughter; Hayleigh Huhtala of Norwich, CT, his sister-in-law, Charlene Huhtala of Gales Ferry, CT and two nieces, Allana Christian and Laura Majeski and two step children; Marjorie Hartford and Michael Hartford and several step grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his brother Allan Huhtala and a step daughter; Patricia Simon.
Calling hours for John will be held on Wednesday evening May 23, 2018 from 4-7 PM at the Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St. Westerly, RI.  A grave-side service with military honors will be held on Friday May 25, 2018 at 11:00 AM at River Bend Cemetery, Beach St. Westerly, RI.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Franklin Lodge #20 Fund in his memory.
