Loretta L. (LaBrecque) Maggs, 101, of Charlestown, RI passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 3, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Albert E. Maggs and together they had celebrated over 64 years of marriage before his passing in 2018. Born in New London, CT on March 5, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Delia (Richard) LaBrecque.
As a youth, she lived in Pawcatuck, CT and learned to speak English while attending St. Michael’s School as only French was spoken at home. She later married Albert Maggs and moved to Charlestown in 1960 and they never left.
Over the years, she was employed at BDA in Ashaway, and then became a fulltime homemaker, taking great pride in the care of her home, husband and 6 children. She later worked for Arcada Microfilm and Yardney Electric.
Her happiest years at home with the family included caring for a huge garden, raising numerous vegetables which they canned to feed the family over the winter months. She prided herself in making meals from scratch and of course her famous homemade donuts and fried dough.
In her free time, she enjoyed reading, especially mysteries and cheering on the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots. She also enjoyed watching NASCAR.
She will be remembered as a strong-willed, hard worker, a woman of faith and having the loving support of her family. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
She leaves her loving six children: Joyce Collings (Henry), Lorie Gilligan (Tom), Edward Maggs (Julie), Barbara Browning, Charles Maggs (Lori) and Lois Maggs. She was the loving grandmother of 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her siblings Lucy (LaBrecque) Quirle, Ernest LaBrecque, Arthur LaBrecque and Francis LaBrecque.
The Maggs family will greet relatives and friends on Thursday, September 7, 2023, from 5-7 PM at the Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St. Westerly. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 8, 2023, at 1pm at the funeral home, followed by burial in River Bend Cemetery, Westerly.
