Mae Dickson Spargo, 96, of Westerly RI died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, February 6, 2021, at the Royal Nursing Home in Westerly. She was born on May 11, 1924, in Vancouver, Canada to the late George and Euphemia (Peters) Dickson.
Mae was raised in Hoosick Falls, New York. She moved to New London CT when she was sixteen to attend nursing school at Lawrence and Memorial Hospitals. She had a forty year career as a registered nurse, first at L&M and later in the maternity ward at Westerly Hospital. She also served her country during World War II as a member of the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps in New London.
Mae truly loved her work as a maternity nurse where she assisted in the births of hundreds of babies. She enjoyed playing golf with her friends and family at Elmridge and Winnapaug golf courses. She had a green thumb as a gardener and had a knack for baking amazingly delicious apple pies. Above all, she loved her family and was never happier than when they were all together with her.
Mae married Ralph Spargo Jr. in 1948 in Ledyard, CT. They had two daughters, Pamela of Savannah, Georgia, who is married to Dr. Joseph Scuderi and Sandra of Westerly, who is married to David Madden. Mae leaves behind six grandchildren Kate, John, Ben Scuderi, Dr. Meg (Peter)Yee, Beth (Matt) Roy and Cindy Campbell, two step grandchildren, Andrew and Jeremy Madden, and three great grandchildren, Finley and Emma Roy and Everly Mathews.
Burial in River Bend Cemetery in Westerly will be private. A memorial service will be at the Grace Methodist Church in Westerly at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mae’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association https://www.alz.org/
