Maria Arminda (Fortes Simao) Vicente died peacefully on Sunday, August 27th, 2023 at Westerly Hospital in Westerly, RI. She was born on September 16th, 1935 in Obidos, Portugal. She was one of ten children and she had a twin sister who predeceased her last year. In 1966 she married and immigrated to the United States.
She was employed by Connecticut Springs in Farmington CT where she made many friends. After she retired, she and her then husband Antonio Vicente, opened a very successful catering business and restaurant in Hartford, CT.
In 2016, she moved to Westerly RI to be closer to her beloved daughter Betty Gencarella and son-in-law, Paul Gencarella Jr. and her adoring grandchildren: Luke, JP and Eliza Gencarella. Up until a few days ago, she would start and end everyday asking where the children were, what they had eaten, and how she could make their lives better. She loved her family beyond measure.
She took pride in her cooking skills, gardening and spending time with many nieces, and nephews. She had a special love for colorful flowers and loved patterned fabrics. A favorite pastime was picking hydrangea and dahlias from the garden to create beautiful vase arrangements. She often spoke of Portugal’s beauty and how that was where you could get the best seafood in the world. Nothing brought her more joy than sardinhas assadas and batatas cozidas with her sisters and brothers. She spent many nights calling her nieces and nephews to catch up on the news and events she watched on the Portuguese Channel. She also had a special adoration for Princess Diana and collected many books and magazines about her life. She lived a full life and spent much of it helping her family in any way she could. She will be sadly missed by so many whom she helped in so many ways.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, August 30th from 3-6pm at Buckler-Johnston Funeral home 121 Main St. Westerly, RI.
Burial will be held privately by the family.
