Mary E. Gavitt

Mary (McGowan) Gavitt, 90, of Babcock Rd, North Stonington, CT, died peacefully on Friday May 14, 2021 at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late Charles Gavitt.

Born in New London, CT on June 1, 1930 she was the 13th child born to Thomas and Bessie (Babcock) McGowan.

Mary lived her whole life in the town of North Stonington. Being the last born to a large family didn’t make Mary a spoiled little girl. She devoted much of her time to the community that she loved. Mary helped cook at the North Stonington fair for many years, and at the North Stonington Fire Department.

Sadly on October 29, 2011, Mary, lost her long time soul mate. Urged by her children, Mary, became a regular at the North Stonington Senior Center. Mary would help prepare meals and would bring her favorite knife from home and sit and help peel twenty pounds of potatoes or fifty pounds of carrots “without complaining.” She was also known for her delicious Christmas cookies and magic bars.

Mary is survived by her devoted children; Judy, Susan and her husband Jay, and Glenn and his wife Mary. She was the loving grandmother of; Billy, Tanya, Amanda, Nickie, Matt and Tom and great grandmother of Gavin, Logan, Morgan and Jack. She also leaves her brother Edmond. She was predeceased by her grandson Artie and son-in-law Art and her six brothers and 3 sisters.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, May 21, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Union Cemetery, route 49, North Stonington, CT. Calling hours are respectfully omitted.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the North Stonington Senior Center.
