Maureen S. Smith, 85, of Westerly, passed away on May 26, 2023. Born in Westerly, RI on May 7, 1938, she was the daughter of the late William and Lucina (Bauerle) Schackner. She was the wife of the late Robert K. Smith.
Maureen graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor’s degree in English. She was employed as a Contract Administrator by Harris Graphics and later GSP of Mystic, CT. She was a faithful parishioner of both St. Pius and Immaculate Conception churches, where she often volunteered to fundraise for Catholic Charities. She spent many joyful hours with her beloved crafts of quilting and knitting, creating treasured family heirlooms. A beach lover, Maureen passed countless hours swimming and sunning at Watch Hill Beach. She was a longtime member of the Westerly Yacht Club and spent weekends there socializing and dancing with Bob.
Maureen was preceded in death by her husband Bob. Maureen leaves her three children, Michael Smith and partner Robin Buck of Westerly, Kimberly Smith Sheppard and husband Jim of Concord, MA, and D’Anne Smith Avotins and husband Mike of Columbus, OH. Maureen leaves four beloved grandchildren, Haley Smith, Ethan Avotins, Emma Avotins and Allison Sheppard.
Maureen leaves her three sisters, Patricia Colonis and her husband Steve of Waterford, CT, Lucina Heipt and her husband Dennis of Rancho Santa Fe, CA and Anne Kele and her husband Roger of Sun City, FL.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, June 5th from 4-7PM at Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St. Westerly, RI. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 6th at 10AM at St. Pius X Church, 44 Elm St., Westerly, RI. All are invited to meet directly at the church. Following the mass, there will be a procession to River Bend Cemetery, Westerly.
