Robinson (Bob) J. Hindle Jr. 98, passed away June 14, 2021 with his beloved wife of 71 years Marguerita (Lombardo) Hindle by his side. Bob and Rita were married on June 17, 1950 in Providence, R.I. They were constant companions enjoying the same activities and traveling the world together.
Bob was born July 9, 1922 in Westerly, Rhode Island to Robinson and MaryAnn (Kilduff) Hindle. He was a 1940 graduate of Westerly High School. After graduation Bob worked at Sikorsky Aircraft then entered the United States Air Force where he proudly served his country as a navigator during WWII. His experience as a navigator led him to become a licensed pilot and hot air balloon enthusiast. His expertise earned him a spot competing in the 1988 Olympics in Calgary, Canada. He and Rita enjoyed many years flying in their hot air balloon “Robin’s Nest”.
Upon leaving the Air Force Bob earned his Doctoral Degree and began a 36 year career at the University of Rhode Island as a Professor of botany, horticulture and landscape design. He was fondly called “Uncle Bob” by the thousands of students he mentored.
Among his many admirable qualities Bob was an engaging conversationalist. He enjoyed sharing his vast knowledge of horticulture, coins and aircraft to name just a few topics. His visitors were always captivated by his intellect and sharp wit until his final day.
Along with his wife Rita, Bob was a faithful and devoted member of Christ Church Westerly. He could be found at every Saturday evening service greeting parishioners with a warm smile and his famous “fist bump”.
Robinson will be greatly missed by his wife Marguerita and his many friends, caring neighbors and church community. He was predeceased by his parents, twin brother Raymond and sister Stella.
