Ruth Childs-A Life Well Lived
Ruth Childs, 90, passed away surrounded by love in her home and on the land she so dearly loved on Sunday, January 16, 2022. She was the beloved wife of Edward I. Childs, and they were long-time members of the North Stonington community.
Ruthie was born to James Smith and Clara (Somers) Smith on January 1, 1932 in Turbotville, PA. She graduated from Turbotville High School then continued to work at the family’s multiple farms and country store until she met the love of her life, Eddie Childs, from Allenwood, PA. Eddie and Ruthie were married on March 8, 1953, and enjoyed a deep and enduring love in a marriage of 66 years. They were two peas in a pod, and not a day went by without them creating a lasting legacy of love, joy, mutual respect and support and an abundance of laughter.
All her life, Ruthie was known for her creativity, sense of humor, and sharp wit. She enjoyed baking, gardening and a multitude of hobbies. She filled her days with creative endeavors – there was nothing she couldn’t do or figure out! She also devoted her life in service to others, every day without exception. Ruthie was the classic strong woman behind the successful husband, always the proud and supportive Navy wife and wife of a Master Mason. Ruthie was always a force of nature, making sure she was always there to support the hopes and dreams of her husband, children, and grandchildren. She played a major supporting role in every organization Eddie belonged to, as well as being a supportive mom involved with the Boy Scouts, cheerleaders, sports and hobbies. She gave her grandchildren once-in-a-lifetime experiences through traveling, sight-seeing and adventures that broadened their horizons. Her family and extended family of friends always knew she would drop everything to be there for anyone in need. She lived her life simply but profoundly: “All for love, love for all.”
Ruthie cherished every part of her family tree, and those left to cherish their memories of her include her three children: George Childs, Marie Childs Hoffmann and Michael Childs, with Leslie Childs and Ron Hoffmann; her grandchildren James Hoffmann, Tressie (Childs) and Shane Smith, Taylor and Stephanie Childs, Sarah Childs, Jesse Boucher, Justin Boucher, Janelle Greene, and Jeana Labas; her great-grandchildren Lilly Jean, Ryker, Briggs and Jaxon Green, Max and Colden Boucher, Sawyer Smith and Novi Childs; and sister Marie Smith. Ruthie also considers her wide circle of friends as “family” and treasured them dearly.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, January 22, 2022 at 3:00pm at the Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St. Westerly, RI. Calling hours will precede the service from 1:00 to 3:00pm.
Everyone knows they could always count on Ruthie to give them a good laugh. The men especially looked forward to a regular dose of Ruthie’s sharp wit, and relied on her to keep her eagle-eye on them and their shenanigans. She would not want things to go to hell in a handbasket because she is not here to keep you fellas on the straight and narrow. So carry on, remember all the good times, and celebrate Ruthie’s life in your own unique way. She lived her life by giving her all in the name of Love and service to life. It was a life well-lived.
In lieu of flowers, perhaps you might consider keeping Ruthie’s legacy of love alive in her memory.
