Velma-Jane (VJ) Steen (Walpole), 92, passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 12, 2021. She was the beloved wife of the late Harold Steen, Jr. and the daughter of Charles Walpole and Jane (Proude) Walpole. VJ was born in Providence, RI, where she graduated from Brown University with a degree in education.
She leaves behind her children: Deborah Mathews, Patricia Steen and their spouses, Mark Mathews and Peter Hickmott. VJ was the proud grandmother of three grandchildren, Jennifer Mathews of Boston, Laura LeBlanc and her husband Benjamin LeBlanc of Townsend, MA and Benjamin Steen of Riverside, CA. She also leaves behind her great-grandson, Leo LeBlanc and a host of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews as well as many in-laws.
VJ spent most of her life raising her two daughters in Melrose, MA., afloat on her sailboat sailing the waters of New England, hosting family holidays, was a Camp Fire Girls leader, Rainbow Girls leader, Eastern Star member as well Worthy Advisor as a girl in Cranston, RI. She spent the last 35 year of her life living on Marco Island, FL, gardening, enjoying the ocean and the views from her lanai.
She surrounded herself with her friends, family members that wintered on Marco and as many visitors as she could invite to her home. VJ loved attending the Episcopal Church, St. Mark’s Church on the island.
A private funeral will be held in Westerly, RI followed by her burial next to her husband of 68 years at the Rhode Island Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery.
