Tribute

Walter K. Babcock of North Kingstown, RI (formerly of Ashaway) and husband of 60 years to the late Beverly E. (Smith ) died at Kent Hospital Friday, Jan 1, 2021 with his daughter Alicia holding his hand. He was the son of George H. and Emily (Perry) Babcock of Alton. He was a strong person who lived through many upsets, but still continued on with his positive outlook.

 Ken, as he was known, graduated from Westerly High School then joined the Navy, serving on the USS Intrepid, which is now a museum in NY.  After the Navy he worked as and retired a welding supervisor from General Dynamics-Electric Boat in Groton, Ct. Ken was an Ashaway Boy Scout leader and Youth Fellowship Advisor as a member of Niantic Baptist Church in Bradford, RI until it closed.  He enjoyed cooking and became the dietician for the Covex Adult Day Service he and Beverly owned in Exeter, RI.  He served two terms as a member of the Hopkinton Town Council, then he became more involved with the Narragansett Indian Tribe. As part of the tribe, he was on the Indian Council, became first-councilman and then served as Chief Sachem. He continued his life long commitment to the tribe by working with the council and being a member of the Elders Group, Silver Clouds. After moving to North Kingstown he stayed a member of Pleasant Street Baptist Church in Westerly, where he became a Deacon.

Ken loved to travel and every year a family vacation was taken to see new places, be adventurous, spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his daughter Alicia Babcock-Raposo and her husband Antonio of North Kingstown, his sisters Gwendolyn Gray of Seattle, Wa, and Mildred Calhoun of Westerly, RI,
His grandchildren, Zackary Raposo, Christina Reyes and great-grandson Carson Raposo all of Middle River, MD.  nieces, nephews and several cousins. 

He is predeceased by his daughters Lolita Ann and Durene Marie, his son Schuyler Perry, his brothers George H. Babcock, Jr, of Woodinville, Wa and Charles R. Babcock, of Alton, and his sister Ina Helme of Groton, CT.
